Tell your fellow travelers about your food finds!

China is such a big country with so many styles of cuisine that even in two weeks you’ll never have the opportunity to do more than get a taste of all the possibilities.

Your time is limited - so make the most of it! Why eat boring or just plain bad food? But how are you supposed to know what is great?

Here’s an opportunity for those of you who’ve already taken the adoption trip to tell other families what they should seek out and what they should shy away from. Send us your suggestions, stories, and photos to weninchinainfo@mac.com - and let’s build a great list!

Definitely try

Beef Noodle Soup (also a variation with pork spare ribs). Huge portion - enough to fill you up - and cheap. The beef is cooked all day long in the broth, so it’s nice and tender. And Chinese spareribs are amazing.

Mint Sprite. You can’t get this in the States! It has a minty flavor and gives a cooling sensation even without being in the refrigerator. Refreshing on a hot day.

Lychee fruit. Sweet, flowery flavor without the sugar rush. You can eat the peeled fruit plain, and they make it into drinks, ice cream, etc.

Bao - baked, steamed, or fried, this bun with fillings is endlessly versatile. Some of the more famous variations include BBQ pork (cha siu bao), soup (xiaolongbao), and red bean filled (doushabao).

Definitely pass

Fish Balls. How do they get them ... a melon baller? No, it’s just ground up fish parts mixed into flour and formed into a marble-sized dumpling. Watch out for little bones.

Chopped pan-fried chicken on the Pearl River Cruise buffet line. The bones stick out every which way, with sharp, jagged edges. The meat isn’t bad, but it isn’t great; don’t cut yourself on it...

Shrimp chips look inviting - crispy crunchy french-fry sized snacking. You might pass out when opening the bag, but if you miss the initial burst of rank fishiness and manage to scarf down a few chips, the smell will hit you from inside your own head! Milk doesn’t cut it (only makes it worse!) I think this must be a bar snack because you need strong alcohol to keep eating them.mailto:weninchinainfo@mac.comhttp://www.flickr.com/photos/joyosity/3204350049/Raves_and_Regrets_files/SB%20CN%20Menu%201.pdfshapeimage_1_link_0
